Took my laptop to Office Depot today with this same virus. Unfortunately, I did not recognize it as an Internet Explorer bug. I was running Microsoft Security Essentials on my laptop and everyone tells me that this does not do a good job with viruses. This is evidenced by the fact that my big computer, running Microsoft Security Essentials, picked up a terrible virus a different one a couple of months ago.

After having to completely reload the operating system Win 7 64 bit and the whole computer, I put the big computer on Norton. Trying to download Norton was how I discovered that my laptop had a virus and would not download anything, even from Microsoft's site, and gave the message that a virus was found and stopped the download.

The very knowledgeable guy at Office Depot said he sees computers with this same virus about twice a day. My virus was in the early stages. Another symptom is that it will "lock up" the system randomly. You have to reboot, it works for awhile, and then it locks up again.

So of course, help would be nice. Elia Florio, of internet security company Symantec, said: 'If your machine is unprotected then it is like an open door to a burglar.

It is believed criminals deliberately struck on December 9, the day that Microsoft released its latest monthly security update, Rik Ferguson, Trend Micro's senior security adviser in the UK, said. The expert said this was a tactic to cause maximum confusion among computer users, who could wrongly believe they were protected. Microsoft said so far it had only found attacks against version 7 of Windows Internet Explorer, the world's most popular web browser, but warned other versions were 'potentially vulnerable'.

In the meantime, some industry experts are advising people to switch to alternative internet browsers such as Firefox and Opera. Others say it is in the interest of security experts to talk up the threat because it could help sales of their software. Microsoft is recommending users to raise their internet security zone to 'high' and reset Internet Explorer to run in protected mode, and keep anti-virus software up to date. John Curran, head of Microsoft's Windows commercial business group in the UK, said that people who switch to a rival browser may find they face different, more serious, security loopholes.
