It seems almost as if the computer is actually three different people. Very realistic. As in real life, correct? Use strategy, quick thinking and a little luck to rouse these napping nobles from their royal slumbers. Play a knight to steal a queen or take a chance on a juggling jester.
But watch out for wicked potions and dastardly dragons! The player who wakes the most queens wins. Sleeping Queens is very much a game aimed at kids, and fairly young ones at that. It is nicely presented with bold, colourful artwork, and there is no real reading required.
The king and queen cards have names written on them, but the only things that really matter are being able to recognise the Cat, Dog and Rose queens for their special rules, and looking at the pictures tells you everything you need to know. Some understanding of numbers is required and the ability to do simple addition, but if that is too much for the kids, you can easily leave that part of the game out. The core of game play is playing king cards, which allow you to choose a queen to wake from the face down spread of queen cards.
Collect enough queen cards or get high enough scoring queens and you win the game. Other special cards allow you to steal queens or send them back to sleep, with others that can block these actions. Finally there are the number cards which do nothing but block up spaces in your hand. You can discard one each turn or, if you are lucky, get rid of pairs or sets of three or more cards that make a sum eg. Overall, the game flows very well.
The mathematical bit with the number cards adds nothing for adults, but my daughter loves working out the sums and gets a real buzz from that aspect. I would recommend this to families with fairly young children probably between about 5 and 9, depending on the kids as it is the sort of thing the little ones are likely to love and the adults will be able to put up with playing a few times.
Sleeping Queens is a delightful card game designed for ages 8 and up and is clearly designed with kids in mind. We have weekly game nights as a family and I also run a cards and board game group for kids ages This is first GameWright card game we have purchased and I hope this review helps you decide whether SQ is for you!
The game ends at that point and all players count up the point values of the queens they have woken. Highest point total wins!
Some queens have special attributes, for example waking the Rose Queen allows you to immediately wake another queen! The standard size deck of cards is shuffled and 5 cards are dealt to each player. The remainder of the cards makes up the draw deck, which is placed in the center of the table. Players make one play per turn and draw back up to five cards at the end of their turn. Knights — Playing a Knight card allows you to steal away a queen from another player. Dragons — This card is the defense card against the knights.
You play this in response to someone trying to steal your queen to prevent it. Sleeping Potion — Playing this card allows you to put another players queen card back to sleep by turning it over and placing it in the middle of the table with the other queen cards. Magic Wand — Like the dragon card, a magic wand card defensively prevents a sleeping potion card from putting one of your queens back to sleep.
Number Cards — Like regular deck of cards, SQ has 4 cards each of number On your turn you may choose to discard a number card to draw a new card. Pairs, three and four-of-a-kind can be discarded to draw that many cards up as well.
