If these are faux muntins and mullions, set between two panes of glass for effect only, they cannot be replaced. The good news is that they will not affect your window's functionality. We are buying an historic house which has a few of the original old windows cracked. I suspect it takes more than just replacing the broken glass with a brand new one, because the rest of the window those are grids, not one piece windows would have a glass that looks different uneven, different transparency, etc…. Are there ways suppliers, contractors, etc… to replace the broken glasses with matching ones?
If yes, how much more expensive it would be? I recently used Pioneer Glass out of Massachusetts for my wavy antique glass for my s Victorian. They have a video on their web site that helps you to identify the best match, and Dave Brunell is a great help. But not cheap.
Can you advise how to remove paint from windows. We have three tradesmen repairing our wooden window putty. They are using Stanley knives and jabbing away at the old putty and not replacing all the old putty. They then fill their holes and paint over what is quite a messy line with no neat corners. Unfortunately they were paid by the real estate agent by past owners so we kept hoping their workmanship would improve. Today they broke one of the windows as they were so heavy handed.
I would like to suggest how they can remove the paint do at least it looks a cleaner and neater finish. Check out my post on Steam Deglazing. It works great. Putty removal is tedious work and it requires some heat to soften it usually. Oh Alison, this is awful!! I used this site for most of my questions. Maybe ask them to watch some videos on this site so that they can see what kind of results you are looking for. If they are good tradesmen and not just some unskilled workers they will want you to be happy with their work.
Have them use some kind of straight edge to cut a clean line and then scrape off the excess. The hardest part is getting the windows out, the rest just takes time, patience, and a learning curve. Thanks for all the great information you have on your site. I was wondering if anyone can tell me why to prime the window with oil-base paint, as opposed to latex paint, prior to reglazing. Does it really need to be oil-base paint? It blocks the wood from pulling the oils out of the new putty.
Thank you for your wondrous information. I have been following it to the letter. I have two questions left. After deglazing and sanding, I notice my Windows have 3 normal rabbits, but at the top they have a slit the window slides into.
When I go to reglaze, do I fill this slot with putty then put the window in, or slide it in dry and glaze? Secondly, though I feel all your categories are very easy to understand and follow, I am not getting the section about spring bronze installation. I get the gist of it, but one major concept I am no getting is which direction I install it in. Can you please clear this up? Thank you for your time.
They are each functionally different, and have unique advantages. Reglazing windows involves removing one of the glass panes and replacing it with a new pane. In a typical older double-paned window, this can be done either on the inside or outside of the window. This is a common procedure done for broken windows that are not favorable for full replacement.
This is especially true for historic gridded windows, in which a homeowner would want to keep the window for historic preservation, but simply repair one small window panel in the multi-panel window array. While it may seem quite simple to reglaze, the cost and time is affected by the custom glass, ensuring the glass pane is nearly exact in size to the previous broken frame. Having a custom sized sheet of glass made or cut to the exact current window specifications can make the cost of reglazing comparable to simply replacing the window altogether.
Also, since all of these steps are typically done by hand, on-site, it is quite tedious, especially placement of spacers and points, glazing compound, and careful placement of the glass pane. It is like surgery, with great attention to detail and care. The slightest mistake can lead to either another broken new pane, or compromised air gap between the glass panes.
In addition, since windows typically have a wide varying degree of sizes, the glass pane often has to be custom ordered, shipped, and very carefully delivered. Factory made full replacement windows, all assembled in a climate controlled environment, have the benefit of being shipped with the frame, and all elements assembled.
The price difference becomes negligible. In addition, there is a higher likelihood of having a drafty gap, or broken seal, due to everything happening on-site, in awkward positions. Wind, debris, difficult heights, all play a part in reglazing a window. And in some cases, the full window has to still be removed, for more stable access, creating all of the same work that would be required to simply replace it with a new one.
The homeowner is then stuck with new glass inside an old window frame. They simply have a repaired window. In summary, reglazing replaces the glass pane and seals. Window replacement replaces the entire window. One only changes out part of the window, the other replaces the entire unit. The main benefit of window reglazing is that it can potentially be less disruptive, since the base frame stays in place. Just the glass, seals and spacers are replaced.
This is most helpful for retaining historic windows. But if you have a newer or modern house, this benefit is not important. Window replacement is replacing windows by removing the old one and installing a new window. This involves these steps and materials:. While the steps involved may be more disruptive than reglazing, they both can be done in about the same time. And since window replacement uses a fully built window, labor is not as tedious and specialized.
Many window replacement installers can install new windows throughout a house in a matter of hours. Using gas-filled or vacuum sealed air gaps. Reglazing cannot do this. These gas fills reduce temperature transfer between interior and exterior. Modern design - the clean, sleek, factory consistency of a new window can give your home a modern look. Benefit from knowing you simply have newer windows.
If you have decided to move forward with replacing your old windows, go with a reputable window and door installer who has years of experience. They often can efficiently and quickly measure, order, deliver and install new windows, and the actual replacement can all occur in less than a day. Here are some suggestions during your search:. This is important if your house is older, and you are looking to maintain its historical significance and craftsmanship.
Reglazing the window keeps the original character and charm that will disappear with a replacement. You may think cracked or broken window glass might require a full replacement, but that is not necessarily true.
A professional glazier can inexpensively and effectively replace your single-pane windows. In some cases, however, replacing your windows is the best option.
Your windows might be at a point where window repair in Denver, CO is simply not a viable choice.
